at the grand archives show this week, i picked up a comp ($5.00) from the folks at aviation records, a seattle based label. not only does this comp have beautiful album art by this man, it features bands like the aforementioned GA, and fleet foxes, and the fabulous band known as the can’t see (john from 764-HERO’s new one.) there’s been a bunch of new discoveries, too…..this one attached has me intrigued—can’t put my finger on it, but i think it’s his voice, partially. his name is neal burton, and he has a myspace and an album, too.

Did / does anyone else listen to Turin Brakes? Their debut album was something special, and since then they have made some pretty decent music. Point: Cocoon and their My Friends All Died In A Plane Crash reminds me of why I was drawn to Turin Brakes initially. Minimal acoustics + gentle voices - singing sweet, memorable songs. Easy on paper/screen - but many have failed trying such simple formulas.
If you like earlier Belle & Sebastian [re:Tigermilk], but yearn for more ‘heart’ and less ‘ache’ - I think Cocoon would serve you well.
“microwave” [ MP3 ]: “Secrets taste like the last time we kissed”
thursday i’ll be seeing this band live (have we told you enough that it’s one of the best and underappreciated albums of 2008?) well, if we’re going to play some weird form of six degrees of carissa’s wierd, grand archives mat was in CW and band of horses before splitting off and starting up grand archives. (and sadly, BoH has not been the same since mat departed. but that’s my opinion only.)
sera cahoone also played in carissa’s wierd—i believe she served as drummer for a while. oh! and she also plays drums on BoH’s first album. (she also has a new album out on subpop which you can find here.)
what does all this mean? not sure if you don’t like carissa’s wierd like we do….but i’m telling you it’s a very good thing.
